KENTUCKY KYU NUMBER

Kentucky Weight Distance number (KYU) is required for any carrier over 59,999 pounds traveling in Kentucky

What is the KYU number?

The KYU number is a tax license issued for the Kentucky Weight Distance Tax.  Any motor carrier 60,000 pounds or greater traveling Kentucky is subject to this tax.  Right now the tax is computed at $0.0285 cents per mile.

What Do I Need First?

Before Kentucky issues the KYU number, they will check a few things to make sure your company is properly registered.  First, your USDOT number must be listed as an "Interstate" carrier.  Second, if you are for-hire, you must have an "Active" MC number.  Finally, you must have a current UCR (Unified Carrier Registration) for your company.

Once I have the KYU number, what do I need to do?

Once you have the number issued, you will need to file your KYU quarterly taxes in a timely manner to keep your license in good standing.  The quarterly reports are due the last day of the month following the end of the quarter.

I'm ready to order, now what?

Simply fill out the required information for your first vehicle below and click Add to Cart to add the filing to your Service Cart.  If you need to add more vehicles, select KYU Add Vehicle from the Related Reistrations / Filings at the bottom of the page.  If you need to add other services, you can click on the service from the Related Registrations / Filings at the bottom of the page, or click Home at the top/left.  If this is the only service you need at this time, just click the Checkout Now button to complete the registration process

s the KYU number the same as IFTA?

NO!!! KRS 138.660. establishes the fuel tax, surtax, and Kentucky Weight Distance Tax (KYU) You cannot pay for KYU on your IFTA tax form. IFTA is a fuel tax based on the fuel consumed by a vehicle within a certain IFTA jurisdiction.

IFTA taxable vehicles start at over 26,000 pounds or has 3 or more axles regardless of weight.

KYU however, is a highway usage tax that is based purely on KY mileage. KYU taxable vehicles start at over 59,999 pounds. If your vehicle is over 59,999 pounds, you will need to pay both.

I am leased to another motor carrier for authority. What should I display on my vehicle?

In the case of a lease please display the name, US DOT number, and MC number of the carrier that you are leased to. If your vehicle is subject to the KYU tax and the company with authority is not providing the KYU tax license, then you must obtain either a temporary permit for the KYU tax, or provide your own KYU tax license linked to your own US DOT number. Kentucky recommends that you display your personal KYU number. However, you are not required by law to display the KYU number. To avoid confusion and delay, it is best if the lease agreement is very clear about which company is paying for which credential.
